What information do you require about my clients and patients? It is helpful for us to have as complete a history as possible. We usually request the entire medical record.
What should my client bring to the appointment? Because many clients and patients have been on several courses of treatments and therapies, it is helpful for us (and them) if they bring any medications the pet has been on or is currently taking as well as the names of different diets they have tried. Also, if they have been keeping notes or calendars regarding their pets condition or medications taken have them bring those along as well.
I have a client ready to allergy test their pet. What medications can interfere with the results? It's important to note that the pet's comfort is our primary concern prior to allergy testing. We may recommend medications and therapies for comfort and schedule testing in the future. Allergy testing may not be right for all patients and clients. That is why we recommend a consultation to determine the needs/wants of the individual client and patient.
Do flavored medications such as Baytril, Rimadyl, Interceptor and Heartgard interfere with a food trial? Absolutely! Even a single kibble of an offending food (cat or dog) can negate a food trial. It is important to keep diets strict and will save your clients time and ease their frustration.
There are many, many medications and supplements that can interfere with accurate results of an allergy test, whether it be a blood or skin allergy test. We require the pet be off the following medications for the indicated time frame before allergy testing: Injectable steroids: 8 weeks Oral steroids: 4-6 weeks Topical steroids: 3-4 weeks Amitriptylline: 3 weeks Antihistamines: 2 weeks EFA's (3v caps, Dermcaps, etc): 2 weeks Cyclosporine (Atopica): 3-4 weeks
